China Banks’ CAR has been discussed extensively recently and aroused strong reaction from the Asian stock markets (See Article from Chinatells). It probably helps to compare the CAR of China Banks to the rest in Asia. It seems that CAR and CAR tier-1 of China Banks are indeed among the lower end across the region, along with that of Korea and Taiwan’s. Banks of Hongkong and Singapore are among the top tier in terms of capital adequacy.

CAR = Capital Adequacy Ratio
Tier 1 capital consists largely of shareholders’ equity. This is the amount paid up to originally purchase the stock (or shares) of the Bank (not the amount those shares are currently trading for on the stock exchange), retained profits subtracting accumulated losses, and other qualifiable Tier 1 capital securities.
