China has an ambitious plan to expand the nuclear power capacity in the next decade (See Article from NYT). While such plan makes perfect business sense, it raises the concern on the safety as most nuclear plants are new big cities and any slight leakage or sign of accident would put milions of people exposed and potential civil unrest. Therefore China is seeking international help to get more qualified nuclear inspectors as a start. As of today, China’s nuclear plants generate about nine gigawatts of power with full capacity utilized, which is about 2.7% of the country’s need. China government targets to increase the capacity to 70 Gigawatts by 2020 and 400 Gigawatts by 2040. Some of the nation’s biggest nuclear plants already got the greenlight to go ahead as part of the effort to meet above targets (See Article from Chinatells).
