High Tech Change people’s life (数字时代)

IPodClassic_LH_080507(China Daily) It is rush hour and Beijing’s subway crush reflects this. Han Song, a frequent traveler between Dongzhimen and Guomao, fights his way to a corner. Sandwiched by the crowds, he reaches for the bag held high above his head and takes out his iPod.

He slides the wheel on the slim gadget, no larger than his palm, and picks one of the more than 1,000 tracks on it. It is enough to distract him on yet another trip.

The mainland’s young music fans are increasingly downloading music to cell phones and other music players, thanks to new technology.

“I can download any kind of music from around the world on the Web and enjoy the tracks anywhere,” Han says. “It has become a habit.” His latest downloads are songs by Hong Kong pop singer Karen Mok and pop group S.H.E. Continue (继续)

China’s most efficient Internet Begger

(WSJ) There’s plenty of evidence that China’s economy right now is flush with cash. And then there’s Wang Hao.

Mr. Wang — best known on the Chinese Internet as Yu Men Hao, or Gloomy Hao — had already made his name on the Internet for his campaign announced to limit weekly living expenses to 100 yuan, or roughly $15, in face of the global economic downtown. It has since become so popular that tens of thousands of people have joined the campaign online (in Chinese, as are the others below), with some claiming to similarly contain their spending and others simply keeping track of daily expenditures. Beijing Worry over Inflation

(WSJ) Inflationary pressures from abroad and at home are likely on the rise in China as the economy recovers, the central bank said, in its first direct reference to the risk of higher prices since the global financial crisis hit.

But the People’s Bank of China signaled no reversal of its moderately loose monetary policy stance, aimed at spurring growth in the world’s third-biggest economy. Continue (继续)

Is BRIC a Fantasy?

bricBRIC is coined by Goldman Sachs to describe the four fastest emerging economies in the world: Brazil, Russia, India and China. All these four countries have gone through phenomenal growth in the last few decades, and their GDP combined has already accounted for about 15% of global economy. It is estimated that BRIC, along with US and Japan will become the six biggest economies by 2050.

However, are the BRIC people really wealthier as it appears on the paper? Who are the real benedictory of the glorious development? For example, China’s real GDP keeps growing at near or above double digit for at least 15 years, but have Chinese people become wealthier by 10% annually in the last 15 years? Continue (继续)

Rio Tinto Spy Case: Who is the real muscle?

b_20090117103329-3363(WUSHU) The Rio Tinto Spy Case has caught large attention of international media recently. It is largely reported that China government claims to have obtained clear evidence that 1) Rio Tinto employees have got highly classified secret of China’s steel industry, which is even not accessible to some of the top management of Chinese steel companies. Following that logic, Rio Tinto’s alleged employees have stolen the national security secret; 2) Rio Tinto employees are susceptible to have bribed the Chinese officials of steel companies to get these secrets. On the other hand, Rio Tinto clearly denied all the charges and called their expatriates employees in China to leave the country.

RMB FX not the focus of this meeting

us-dollar-vs-china-yuan-thumb7621804(Beijing) China and American top government officials meet this week for strategic dialogue. It is understood that the RMB FX rate is not going to be the topic during the meetings. US has been complaining about CNY’s over low exchange rate for long. IT is suspected that the reason why Washington is not going to stress more pressure on Beijing is that: 1) Washington does not have much influence on Beijing; 2) China still depends heavily on US for government treasury for its foreign reserve; 3) US realizes the importance to work together with China to go through the financial crisis.

Gas produced from Coal: the next War

cwreserves(Beijing) Coal made Gas production facility has been under the spotlight being chased by more than 10 big corporations in China. According to some inside information, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia has huge reserves of coal, which if successfully utilized to produce gas, will have massive upside on returns.

500 Billion USD in Property and Stock Market?

RMB(Beijing) According to an estimate from statistics released by the government, China’s loan growth in first half 2009 amounts to about 7.37 trillion yuan (about 1.1 trillion USD). Out of that loan amount, as much as 50% (500 billion USD) could have been channeled into stock and property market. Some economist from the government sector have expressed huge concerns over such capital flow and its potential effect on Bank Risk. According to these economists, the loan growth should slow down in second half and they estimate the whole year loan to increase about 10 trillion Yuan (1.5 Trillion USD) in total.

Central Bank to Tighten Money Supply?

123803948571(Beijing) According to a recent estimate, Chinese banks have lent out a total of 7.4 Trillion Yuan (about 1 trillion USD), which is way higher than the initial target (5 trillion Yuan). The central bank has realized the liqudity risk and is likely to take some measure to control the situation.

Chinese Consumption: it is a question

(CLSA) Is it possible that Chinese household consumption is rising by an amazing 17%, as signaled by the real rate of retail sales growth? In short, no – although consumption is still expanding at a healthy pace.

This growth is driven by several factors: a rapidly increasing level of consumer confidence, based on steady improvement in macroeconomic data; the absence of household debt; strong income growth in the past few years; mild deflation to mitigate the absence of wage growth this year; and strong demand for goods and services by the large number of Chinese who only recently earned enough money to move into the consuming class. Chinese Hunter still there (海外并购路漫漫)

(CER) Put together a Chinese state-owned enterprise, a foreign country’s natural resources and a selection of that same country’s politicians, and sparks will fly. This is why certain types of outbound investment will always be a precarious balancing act for China.

As we discuss in this month’s cover story, China’s oil giants have learned their lessons the hard way. Now Aluminum Corp of China (Chinalco) has, too.

Chinalco’s first investment in Anglo-Australian miner Rio Tinto, paying US$14 billion for a 9% stake, was a surprise. The second, unsuccessful investment – US$19.5 billion, including US$7.2 billion in convertible bonds that would take its holding in Rio to 18% – was more predictable. Continue (继续)

Books about China in 2008 (中国书籍简介)

maoBooks about China in 2008

(FEER) In this look back at some of the best accessible China books of 2008, just think of me as your personal Amazon.com, a bundler of titles that go well together.  For my approach here will not be the usual one of focusing on single works, but rather that of creating thematic pairs of books that are particularly effective when read together.

My pairs will be a bit more adventuresome than those often found on the real Amazon sites.  For example, I won’t suggest, as Amazon’s UK site does, that purchasers of former journalist Catherine Sampson’s latest whodunit, “The Slaughter Pavilion” (Macmillan), should also order the same author’s 2007 “Pool of Unease” (Macmillan), her first novel to include action set in the PRC, where she now lives.  Nor will I encourage, as Amazon.com does, purchasers of Michael Meyer’s “The Last Days of Old Beijing: Life in the Vanishing Backstreets of a City Transformed” (Walker Books), an excellent book of reportage, should also pick up Leslie T. Chang’s “Factory Girls: From Village to City in a Changing China” (Spiegel and Grau), about which the same thing can be said. Continue (继续)

The Shaolin Temple (少林寺)

00000549Movie Review – The Shaolin Temple – Zhang Xinyan – 1979

Between 1974 and 1979, after Nixon had opened up China, the Chinese National Wushu Team toured the world, including the White House, and people got to see what all the fuss was about. Wushu is the catch-all term for Chinese martial arts, and as a sport it takes the motions and athleticism of combat martial arts and turns them into a sort of performance art. During performances, kids and adults would demonstrate classic weapons techniques and hand-to-hand styles.

One of these kids was Li Lian Jie, a prodigy who went on to win gold medals in the Chinese National Martial Arts Contest from 1974 to 1979. Then the government produced a kung fu movie based on a folk tale about the monks at the legendary Shaolin Temple. Li was tapped to star, and the entire cast was filled with performers from various wushu teams in China. The movie came out, became a huge success that spawned two in-name-only sequels, and Li Lian Jie was dubbed Jet Li. You don’t like wirework? I’m not crazy about it either. You don’t like obvious stunt doubles? Ditto. So grab a copy of “The Shaolin Temple”, put the thinking side of your brain on hibernate, and watch some of the most amazing stuff you’ll ever see in a kung-fu movie.

swordThere is an excellent webiste to introduce the Chinese martial art, the ancient Chinese history, and Tai Chi Quan. There are a lot of photographic description of Chinese history and the origin of martial art, and how can you get the most of it in Chinese Sword Guide.

So what do you get when you have wushu athletes instead of actors in a kung-fu movie? Some of the finest, real martial arts action ever put on film. You get a hint of it at the start, when we see a pack of teenaged monks practice with fighting sticks, moving in perfect timing with one another like a tougher version of “Riverdance.” Once the fighting really starts, characters go at each other, armed and unarmed, with the speed, grace and precision that can only come from a lifetime of practice. And the background for most of the action is beautiful rural Mainland China, not some studio set, and that alone gives the movie a feel that’s different from what was coming out of Hong Kong at the time. The Road Home (我的父亲母亲)

3560746029_c67ccbfa02_mMovie Review – The Road Home – Zhang Yimou – 1999

This movie marked the cinematic debut for Zhang Ziyi, one of the famous Chinese actress for the moment.

Concerning itself with the relationship between the old and the new, and of city and country, “The Road Home” specifically involves a young man living in the city who returns to his beautiful, peaceful but poor birthplace to attend the funeral of his father, the much revered local teacher. The inconsolable mother insists that he receive an old-style funeral, rarely seen since the Revolution, for which dozens of men will be required to accompany the coffin on the way to the place of burial. As the son organises the event, he recounts the burgeoning relationship of his young parents for whose romance the dusty, winding country road proved crucial. Hence its importance to the funeral.

Shower 1999 (洗澡)

3560745929_5c0966deed_mMovie Review – Shower – Zhang Yang (1999)

This film by Zhang Yang tells the story of a Shenzhen businessman who returns home to Beijing thinking his father – who runs a bathhouse – has died. It turns out, however, to just be a ruse used by his mentally retarded brother to get him home. Given his father’s failing health, the central character has to take stock of his family and future.

The director makes good use of cinematic space to show the two separate worlds of the sophisticated Shenzhenite and the more rough-cut father and son and as the movie progresses, uses it to convey how those worlds move closer.

To live: A Novel (活着)

120081227101439Book Review – Yu Hua – To Live: A Novel

The novel opens with a nameless first-person narrator telling the reader of his old job that consisted of traveling and collecting folksongs and old stories. The villagers were generally happy to see him and were completely willing to relay stories of their past days. Although he enjoyed their stories, the narrator had yet to find a person who could completely recreate his past. However, after he met an old farmer named Fugui who was busy plowing his fields and kindly coaxing his old ox to work, his desire was satiated.

In his younger days, like his father before him, Fugui had been the epitome of the prodigal son. Spending his days whoring and gambling, Fugui wasted huge amounts of money. However, it seems that he enjoyed himself, doing such things as riding a fat prostitute piggyback and ordering her to take him around town. His father was of course upset, but having been of a similar bent himself during his younger days, he did not protest too much. In the eyes of Jiazhen, his lovely, but pregnant, wife, his mother, and his little girl, Fengxia he could do no wrong. However, when a professional gambler named Long Er made the scene, things truly began to go bad. Fugui had at first been able to pay his debts on the spot, but eventually he had to put everything on credit that eventually resulted in him losing the family’s ancestral land to Long Er. 1421 : ” The Year China Discovered the World ” (1421航海纪实)

1421Book Review – Gavin Menzies – 1421: the year China discovered the world

In this outstanding book, retired submarine captain Gavin Menzies rewrites history and takes us on an epic adventure around the world in the company of huge Chinese fleets carrying soldiers, craftsmen and concubines.

Using a mixture of medieval maps and manuscripts, an in-depth and practical maritime knowledge, botanical evidence and sound reasoning, Menzies puts forward his theory that China, not Europe, discovered America, Australia, and the rest of the world – decades before Europeans set sail for distant seas.

In a rich and descriptive style, Menzies tells of the lives of the Emperor Zhu Di, who ordered the voyages of exploration, and of Admiral Zheng He, his friend and chief eunuch. He goes on to describes the huge treasure fleets and tracks their course across the face of the globe. At each landfall, Menzies gives evidence of the Chinese presence, delving into the folklore of the area’s inhabitants and noting the presence of Asian plants and chickens far from China’s shores, predating the first Europeans.

This book is a must for anyone interested in keeping up to date with the most recent historical discoveries. In one fell swoop, Menzies has turned the old idea that Europeans first discovered America and circumnavigated the globe on its head. The history books will have to re-written! Continue (继续)
